Italian done right at La Trattoria, Adelaide

04/03/2025

Walk into Adelaide’s La Trattoria, and the air is thick with simmering tomatoes, wood-fired crust, and the memories of thousands of conversations, of families breaking bread, couples leaning in over candlelight, and late-night diners squeezing one last laugh out of their evening.

An enduring pillar of Italian hospitality for over two decades, the walls of this family-run institution don’t just hold history; they wear it. A gallery of famous faces stares back at you – Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi, and Ayrton Senna, amongst countless others who’ve pulled up a chair, twirled their pasta, and stayed for just one more glass of red.

Italian done right

The extensive Italian menu at La Trattoria sees every dish prepared with devotion and authenticity by hands that remember. Hands that have rolled the same dough, stirred the same sauce, and crafted dishes with the kind of skill that only comes from time, tradition, and an unshakable love for the craft.

Bruschetta Monte Bianca is always a great place to start, the garlic-kissed pizza bread piled high with tomatoes, bocconcini, and fresh basil. Spaghetti Cozze, perfectly cooked pasta tangled around plump mussels, capers, and olives in a rich tomato sauce, and Spaghetti Marinara piled with seafood so fresh it might have leapt straight from the ocean are standouts. Then there’s the Scaloppine alla Pescatore, fork-tender veal bathed in white wine, tomato, avocado and cream, piled with calamari and king prawns curled up like commas in a sentence you never want to end. At least until you're distracted by the arrival of a creamy tiramisu.

And the pizza? It’s legendary. Solid, crisp-edged beauties made with quality ingredients and perfect ratios. From the bright simplicity of a Margherita, a testament to how great ingredients need little interference, to Andy’s Marinara Fresh Seafood, winner of the “Best Gourmet Pizza” competition (in South Australia, Australia, and then New York!), there's a reason people have been coming back for them year after year.

Service with heart

The food arrives fast but never rushed. The friendly staff, many of whom have been working at La Trattoria for over 20 years, simply understand the rhythm of a good meal. They know when to let you sit, when to bring more wine, and when to clear plates so you can make room for one more bite. The restaurant’s commitment to its customers is clear too in its recent return to takeaway. Every dish, whether plated at your table or packed to go, carries the same dedication to quality and tradition.

Dining at La Trattoria is not about trends, or flash, or anything that needs to be explained. It’s about knowing that if you show up hungry, they’ll take care of you. About the way a bite of perfect pasta, the sound of a bustling kitchen, and the hum of happy diners can make the world feel right, even if just for a moment.
